Phycology Section in the DBG

From March 9^th to 12^th, 2025, the 21^st scientific conference of the Phycology Section of the German Society for Plant Sciences (DBG) took place in the venerable halls of the "Alte Mensa" at the University of Göttingen. The conference was organized by Dr. Maike Lorenz, Prof. Jan de Vries, Prof. Thomas Friedl, and Dr. Janine Fürst-Jansen (University of Göttingen), and provided over 120 participants from Germany and abroad an opportunity to present and discuss their current research in the field of algal studies. A wide range of phycological topics was covered in 44 talks and 50 posters. Most of these contributions were presented by PhD students and postdocs and stood out for their high scientific quality. One of the many highlights was the visit to the University of Göttingen's Culture Collection of Algae (SAG) on the final day of the conference. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to explore Göttingen’s historic old town through guided tours in both German and English, with many references to the university city's fascinating history.

During our biannual Phycology Conference members elected new speakers and board members. Three long-standing board members did not stand for re-election: Dr. Thomas Leya, Prof. Severin Sasso, and Dr. Charlotte Permann. The new acting board will be in office for the next two years and consists of: 

Prof. Andreas Holzinger (1^st Speaker), Jun.-Prof. Karin Glaser (2^nd Speaker), Dr. Maike Lorenz (Treasurer), Jun.-Prof. Klaus Herburger (Secretary), Prof. Claudia Büchel (1^st Accessor), Prof. Peter Kroth (Representative in the Federation of European Phycological Societies (FEPS) and 2^nd Accessor) and Dr. Vivien Hotter (Graduate Representative). 

To inspire early interest in algal research, our Section bianually awards the High School Student Prize. This year, the prize was awarded to Maddox Srey-Ouch and Witalij Plett from the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium and the Student Research Center (Schülerforschungszentrum) in Tuttlingen (Baden-Württemberg) for their biotechnology project “Photopower – Energy from Algae.”

The newly discovered algae species Streptofilum arcticum possesses a potentially highly flexible cell wall: When water is scarce, the cell and cell wall shrink; when water becomes available again, the cell wall expands without causing damage. This function explains the evolutionary transition from water to land and provides the algae with advantages in climate adaptation. An international research team led by TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the Universities of Rostock and Innsbruck, and the National Academy Institute in Kyiv has described the species and its cell functions for the first time in a recent publication in the scientific journal Environmental Microbiology. To date, researchers have identified the new algae species in the Arctic tundra on Svalbard and in coastal dunes along the Baltic Sea, indicating a broader regional distribution than previously assumed.

The 20^th scientific meeting of our Phycology Section took place from March 12 to 15, 2023 in the Rosensäle in Jena. Prof. Dr. Maria Mittag and PD. Dr. Volker Wagner organized the meeting, for which 91 algal researchers registered. They presented and discussed up to date topics of phycology. Maria Mittag, chair of the Phycology Section, welcomed all participants on the first day and presented the topics of the individual Sessions of the Meeting. She acknowledged the following institutions on behalf of the Section for their support: the German Society for Plant Sciences, Friedrich Schiller University Jena with its Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse, as well as the companies (in alphabetic order) Agrisera, New England Biolabs, Walz and Zeiss. Maria Mittag mentions the topics of the meeting in her Report and describes the price for high school students under the theme „Shaping the Future with Algae“, which was awarded for the second time. She reports about further prices for students including PhD students as well as about the Pringsheim price awarded for the best presentation of a PhD thesis. Finally, she reports about the von Stosch Award presented to an outstanding phycologist who enthused the audience with his critical questions about photosynthesis and phycology and inspired the people with a poem on evolution.

Three members of the Board, who have contributed for many years, decided not to stand again for election and made also place for younger phycologists. These are the graduate speaker Dr. Karin Glaser, the secretary Prof. Dr. Andreas Holzinger und the chair Prof. Dr. Maria Mittag. In the General Assembly Meeting, held March 13, 2023, the following members standing for election were voted for:

Die 18. wissenschaftliche Tagung der Sektion Phykologie fand vom 8. bis 11. März 2020 im Kloster Steinfeld in der Eifel statt. Prof. Dr. Burkhard Becker hatte die Algenforscher*innen zum wissenschaftlichen Austausch geladen und 65 Teilnehmende waren dem Ruf gefolgt. Prof. Dr. Peter Kroth, Vorstandsmitglied und Bindeglied zur Federation of European Phycological Societies (FEPS), listet die Vorträge und Tagungsschwerpunkte in den Actualia unserer "Mutter" Deutsche Botanische Gesellschaft (DBG). Die Sektion verlieh erstmals den Schüler*innen-Preis und zeichnete hervorragende Vorträge und Poster der Nachwuchskräfte mit Preisen aus. Die turnusgemäße Wahl der Sprecher*innen und Funktionäre bestätigte alle amtierenden Mitglieder des Vorstands im Amt.

The alga Chromera velia lives associated with corals in the Australian Great Barrier Reef. It is related to parasites such as the pathogen that causes malaria, however, the alga can live without a host, whereas parasites are dependent upon their hosts for survival. Chromera velia combines the lifestyles of free-living algae and parasites and thus helps to understand the evolution of pathogens. Algal researchers from the German Society for Plant Sciences (DBG) have curated Chromera velia as Alga of the Year 2020.

Registration and abstract submission is now possible for the Section's upcoming scientific conference that will take place in Kloster Steinfeld in Eifel near Cologne, Germany, from 8^th to 11^th March 2020. It will be organized from Prof. Dr. Burkard Becker and his team. Early Bird rates end on 6^th December 2019.

Alle Schülerinnen und Schüler in Gymnasien, Gesamtschulen und ähnlichen Einrichtungen können Projekte einreichen zum ersten Wettbewerb „Mit Algen die Zukunft gestalten“. Jedes Projekt kann teilnehmen, sofern die Einreichenden 16 Jahre oder älter sind. Den Preistragenden winken nicht nur Auszeichnung und Preisgeld, sondern auch eine Einladung zur nächsten wissenschaftlichen Konferenz der Sektion Phykologie in der Deutschen Botanischen Gesellschaft, in der die ausschreibenden Algenforscher*innen organisiert sind. Vom 8. bis 11. März 2020 in Steinfeld in der Eifel können die Preistragenden ihr Projekt den Forscherinnen und Forschern vorstellen. Einsendeschluss ist der 15. Januar 2020.

Die Alge Chlamydomonas nivalis, die auf der ganzen Welt Schnee blutrot zu färben vermag, haben Forschende zur Alge des Jahres gewählt. Auch 200 Jahre nach einer Expedition, bei der Kapitän John Ross auf einer Polarfahrt den Roten Schnee zeichnete und den Verursacher im Mikroskop zu erkennen suchte, gibt die Alge weiterhin Rätsel auf. Schneealgenexperte Dr. Thomas Leya vom Potsdamer Fraunhofer IZI-BB erklärt, warum das so ist und wo der winzige Einzeller zu entdecken ist. Leya ist Mitglied der Sektion Phykologie, in der die Algenforscher der Deutschen Botanischen Gesellschaft (DBG) organisiert sind, die Chlamydomonas nivalis zur Alge des Jahres 2019 gewählt haben.

Drunig the meeting of the Section in Berchtesgaden, Germany, Professor Christian Wiencke from Alfred Wegener Institute received the Hans Adolph-von-Stosch-Medaille for his contunious achievements for the Phycology Section.

Der Pringsheim-Preis für herausragende Doktorarbeiten wurde dieses Jahr an Dr. Miriam Bernard, Sorbonne Universités, Roscoff, für ihre Arbeit zu Endophyten in der Makroalge Saccharina latissima verliehen. Den Algological Studies-Förderpreis für die beste Präsentation einer Masterarbeit erhielt Ahn T. (Lina) Van, FU Berlin, für ihre Forschung zu phylogenetischen Beziehungen einiger Diatomeentaxa innerhalb der Cymbellaceae. Die Preise für die besten Poster gingen an Vivian Hotter, Uni Rostock, über biologische Bodenkrusten und an Liv Celin Krämer, Uni Mainz, über frühe Carotinoid-Biosynthesewege in Algen. Zudem wurden Buchgutscheine an neue Mitglieder der Sektion verlost.

Über 100 Algenforscherinnen und -forscher aus sechs Ländern waren im März in Berchtesgaden zusammen gekommen, um sich über die jüngsten Forschungsergebnisse auszutauschen. Sie behandelten die ganze Vielfalt der Algenforschung in mehr als 40 Vorträgen und thematisierten Genome, Transkriptome, Metabolome, Metabarcoding sowie Aspekte zum Global Change neben Physiologie und angewandter Algenforschung. Der neu gewählte Beirat, Dr. Thomas Leya berichtet nicht nur über die Themen und Schwerpunkte, sondern auch über die Vorstandswahl, die preisgekrönten Nachwuchskräfte und erklärt, warum Professor Dr. Christian Wiencke mit der Ehren-Medaille der Sektion ausgezeichnet wurde.

Professorin Dr. Maria Mittag von der Uni Jena wurde einstimmig zur neuen Sprecherin der Sektion Phykologie gewählt. Sie hatte zuvor als stellvertretende Sprecherin von Dr. Regine Jahn (BGBM Berlin) amtiert. Jahn, bislang erste Sprecherin, hatte sich nach nunmehr 10 Jahren im Vorstand der Sektion von dem Amt zurückgezogen. Auch die anderen Mitglieder des bisherigen Vorstands wurden bei der turnusgemäßen Wahl in Berchtesgaden einstimmig gewählt: Prof. Dr. Claudia Büchel ist nun zweite Sprecherin der Sektion und war in der vorangegangenen Amtsperiode Beisitzerin. Als neuer Beisitzer fungiert nun Dr. Thomas Leya vom Fraunhofer-IZI in Potsdam. Die im Amt bestätigten Schriftführer Assoz.-Prof. Dr. Andreas Holzinger, Schatzmeisterin Dr. Maike Lorenz, Graduierten Beisitzerin Dr. Karin Glaser und der Vertreter in der Federation of European Phycological Societies (FEPS) Prof. Dr. Peter Kroth traten wie die oben Genannten mit dem Wahldatum ihre Vorstandsämter an. Neuer Kassenprüfer ist Dr. Martin Lohr von der Uni Mainz.

Die mehrzellige Grünalge Klebsormidium lebt an Land an solchen Orten, wo keine andere Pflanze mehr wachsen kann. Als weltweit verbreiteter Pionier schafft sie neue Lebensräume, was Farmer und Wüstenanrainer nutzen. Forscher interessieren sich für ihre biologischen Tricks, wie sie zwischen leblos und Wiedererwachen hin und her wechselt. Die Professoren Andreas Holzinger (Universität Innsbruck) und Ulf Karsten (Universität Rostock) erforschen in enger Kooperation die Fähigkeiten, die die Alge vor Austrocknung und gefährlichen UV-Strahlen schützt. Beide sind Mitglieder der Sektion Phykologie der Deutschen Botanischen Gesellschaft (DBG), die Klebsormidium zur Alge des Jahres 2018 kürte.

Our Section is the largest non-profit association for algal research and phycology in the German speaking area. The network promotes phycology and represents more than 140 scientists (in March 2018) and researchers in the German Society for Plant Scientists (DBG). It also aims to introduce and to enthuse non-specialists for this fascinating and important organisms. The Phycology Section supports young scientists, unites all generations and promotes the exchange between its members.

Members of the Phycology Section support the aims and objectives of our Section. The more members we have the more powerful we are able to advocate the concerns of phycology and phycologists in the scientific community, in the public and in politics.
