German Botanical Society (DBG)

About us

The Phycology Section is one of five subject-specific Sections of the German Botanical Society ( Deutsche Botanische Gesellschaft (DBG, e.V.). It was founded in 1984 to bring together phycologists from Germany and neighbouring countries.

Algae are a fascinating group of organisms and our main goals are the promotion of their research, the support of young scientists and the facilitation of scientific discussions on algae.

For this purpose we organise bi-annual scientific meetings in different locations in Germany , support further training (see out pages on Services) and networks for our members. We award the Hans-Adolf von Stosch-Medal for special services for the Section, the E. G. Pringsheim-Prize for outstanding PhD research, as well as the Biomaris Student Prize for an outstanding Diploma, Bachelor or Masters Thesis (for details please refer to the constitution).

We provide an information service and offer expert advice to the media. We highlight significant scientific publications in the Journal Club. As of 2007 we nominate an Alga of the year’ to raise public awareness of important algae.

Most of our work within the Section is financed by member fees (please see membership). We are also supported by sponsors.
